What is the Houston SPCA and what do you do? The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. We provide the most comprehensive array of animal adoption, shelter, rescue, rehabilitation and other programs and services in the Gulf Coast area.
$10 DOG ADOPTION FEES AT THE HOUSTON SPCA - Houston SPCA
Why do you charge an admissions fee? The Houston SPCA charges a very nominal fee to admit your animal to our shelter. We do not euthanize animals for space or at the end of a certain time period and we proudly place 100 percent of our healthy animals into loving new homes. Once your dog or cat arrives at our shelter and is accepted into the adoptions program, he/she is vaccinated, dewormed, spayed or neutered and microchipped. Canines over 6 months of age are tested for heartworm disease. While at our shelter your pet’s health and behavior is continually monitored. We estimate that it costs us approximately $400 to get a pet ready for adoption.
10 DOG ADOPTION FEES AT THE HOUSTON SPCA
So we can all rest easy. The Houston SPCA will not adopt out pit bulls ever and it didn’t this time either. Because of Hurricane Ike and maybe the bad publicity that might come with killing perfectly healthy dogs that the humanitarian SPCA had just rescued (film at 10), this lucky dozen got spared. But make no mistake, it will probably never happen again (and they didn’t do it this time either!).
