The Bolts might be San Diego’s modern nickname, but the moniker has a throwback origin. Though the franchise has seen many uniform overhauls since 1960, the Chargers’ lightning bolt logo has stayed in place throughout on helmets, jerseys and pants. After more than two decades of varying color shades and uniform styles, San Diego’s traditional powder blue and yellow scheme returned for good in 2002 and has been worn as a home alternate in every season since. In 2007, San Diego ditched its navy shells that lasted 18 years in favor of a classic white helmet with a yellow and blue thunderbolt worn in the 1960s. For a 13-year period beginning in 1974, the Chargers switched their blue from powder to royal and donned solid yellow pants with white accents on gamedays. Home jerseys were royal blue with yellow numerals while road whites featured blue numerals. Lightning bolt stripes adorned each shoulder. Another revamping happened in 1988 when the franchise switched its blue to an even darker hue — navy. Navy pants made their debut in 1990 and have been in play since. In 2003, the Chargers went monochrome all-navy at home for the first time in history on Monday Night Football but the get up only lasted one season. San Diego’s current uniform style made its debut in 2007 when the franchise moved its patented lightning bolt shoulder stripes to sleeves and brought back the white helmets. Also included was a redesigned lightning bolt with a powder blue outline, a subtle ode to the Chargers of the 1960s. Currently, San Diego has four uniform combinations — navy on white, white on navy, white on white and powder blue on white.
