If your Shih Tzu has a long coat, it is best to line dry the dog using a fluff or stand dryer. Systematically line dry the entire coat right down to the skin. Make sure the dog is completely dry in the area you are working on before you move onto the next section. Once the Shih Tzu is completely dry, make sure the coat is tangle free. Double check your brush out by using a metal comb. It should glide freely through the coat all the way down to the skin.

How often you bathe your Shih Tzu depends on how dirty your dog's coat is and it is also a personal choice, but once every three weeks may be a good frequency. In general, the wider space and longer bristle on the brush works well with the longer hair coat, and if the coat is more coarser like Terrier, you will need a stiffer bristles in closely spaced. Some breeds like Shih Tzu and Pomeranian has very fine woolly undercoat and it is best to use a slicker brush to remove any tangles and mats first, then followed by firm wide spaced bristle or the standard comb on the outer coat.
